Resources and Events for Mentors and Future Mentor Teachers

One of BCAIP’s project goals is to strengthen the mentorship of preservice teachers in support of emergent bilinguals’ biliteracy in the content areas through ongoing professional learning for mentor teachers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do BCAIP mentors and future mentors do?

BCAIP Single Subject English, Math, and Science Mentor and Future Mentor Teachers participate in an initial 2-day professional learning experience to foster our collective “translanguaging stance” and begin to understand how to integrate biliteracy and content area learning through BCAIP’s teaching practices. Throughout the year, the mentors and future mentors participate in additional events to learn strategic translanguaging moves that they can apply to their own teaching and when mentoring teacher candidates.

Why and how can I join the BCAIP community?

Through BCAIP, you will receive the following benefits:

  • Professional Growth: Engage in new research-based approaches that integrate biliteracy into content area instruction through translanguaging, while also strengthening how to mentor preservice teachers.
  • Networking: Instantly join and share ideas with a community of over 50 mentors and teacher educators.
  • Financial compensation:
    • $1,000 for completing an initial 2-day hybrid professional learning experience (August) and lesson.
    • Additional $1,000 for each year that you mentor a Sonoma State (SSU) or Cal State East Bay (CSUEB) single subject English, Math, and Science teacher candidate (until 2026).
    • Additional $2,000 if you add a Bilingual Authorization (in Spanish) by 2026.

I am a middle or high school English, math, or science teacher. What is expected of me?

  • Attend a 2-day hybrid professional learning experience at SSU or CSUEB (August). Returning BCAIP  teachers are invited to attend part the first day for additional compensation.
  • Complete a “translanguaging infused” lesson plan and allow a BCAIP team member to observe you teaching this lesson (in person or through a video)   (Fall semester)
  • Complete any necessary documents and online training required to be hired/compensated by the university

What if I will NOT be able to mentor (or be assigned) a SSU or CSUEB teacher candidate in 2023-2024?  You still get the $1,000 for the initial professional learning and translanguaging infused lesson. You will be invited, but not obligated, to attend additional BCAIP events. We hope you can mentor in a future year!

  • What if I WILL be able to mentor and am assigned  a SSU or CSUEB preservice teacher in 2023-2024? You will additionally be expected to:
  • Participate in 2 half day convenings (1 per semester)
  • Participate in 1 half day collaborative learning event or multiple 90 minute virtual workshops
  • Complete at least 2 translanguaging-focused observations and debriefs with your preservice teacher
