Guide for Secondary Teaching
This information is for prospective Sonoma State University undergraduate students who wish to become middle school, junior high or high school teachers or who wish to teach a specialized subject such as art, music or physical education at all levels.
At Sonoma State University, there are two options for becoming a secondary school teacher:
1. Traditional Subject Matter Track
- Bachelor's Program-major of your choice
- General Education
- Major Coursework
- Credential Prerequisites
- Meet Subject Matter Competency
- EARN bachelor’s degree
- CREDENTIAL PROGRAM
- Credential Coursework
- Student Teaching
- EARN Credential in one year
2. Subject Matter Waiver Preparation Track
- Bachelor's Program with Subject Matter Waivers: English, Math, Music, FD Science
- Major Coursework
- Subject Matter Coursework
- Prerequisites & Field Experience
- EARN bachelor’s degree
- CREDENTIAL PROGRAM
- Credential Coursework
- Student Teaching
- EARN Credential in one year
